'Yes' be 'No' and 'No' be 'Maybe'... | Print |  E-mail

Hi fams

I was just now having a bit of a moment. I've been giving my room a well overdue clean and whilst doing so been listening to my ipod play some of my favourite songs in random rotation (nice alt)

I just heard the song, "Love you that much" by Mary Mary and I usually love singing that song but today I'm rethinking whether I can sing it or not. It's not that I don't like it and no, I don't have any deep story about ‘subliminal messages in music’ or anything like that. My simple thought was "Do I mean it?"
The words of the chorus say:

If you tell me to go I'm gonna tell you I will
Coz I love you that much
If you tell me to stay and be still, I will
Coz I love you that much
Tell me what to say, even if I'm afraid I will
Coz I love you that much
It doesn't matter, whatever, whenever, I will
Coz I love you that much

I’d like to think I am obedient and ‘Christian’ enough to hear any unheard of, outlandish, “have you lost your mind!?!” kind of command from God and without any questions just do it, but in listening to the song, and in small events that followed I was challenged to think… “Would I really?

It’s way too easy in a moment of pure emotion to tell God we’d do anything, say anything or go anywhere He wants, but the reality is if that time came, most, if not all of us would think twice or have a good few questions to ask. That's due to the fact that, more often than not, what God requires is way out of our comfort zone, simply because He doesn’t exist in our comfort zone.

I feel that if I’ve made God any kind of promise, even in simply singing along to a song, He will test the theory and I will have to prove whether or not what I said was really true. I don’t think this is because He just wants to catch me out, but I believe it’s because what I’ve said to Him is what He actually wants! He just wants to see it fulfilled.

We as Christians (and musicians) can be easily swayed by ‘the motions’. We (think we) know what God wants and we’re quick to say it because we reckon He'd like it. We mean well but in truth, deep, deep, DEEP down in our hearts, we’re not always willing to do absolutely everything we can to make sure we hold to our word.

That's why before we go and sing songs, we MUST think about what we say. We need to think about what we can’t yet fulfill, then consider how we can get to a place where we will be able to see those words through to fruition.

I agree with the bible in that we should “Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your “No’, ‘No’…” (Matt 5:37) In a moment of emotional excitement we can’t ever let our ‘Yes’ be ‘No’ or ‘No’ become a ‘Maybe’. Let’s make our words and actions align.

Gwarn TRULY, that's nothing but the truth you're talking! I am so proud of you smilies/wink.gif
We really do have to be so careful about the things we promise God (as well as each other)
It reminds me of the scripture in Ecclesiastes 5:5 which says "Better not to vow, than to vow and not pay" :-
Continue to let Him use you Tulee x
